  • Apple. The world’s most valuable company is legendary for its huge, intensely loyal, and enduring community of customers, product reviewers, YouTubers, and websites. 

  • Axie Infinity. A powerful example of a play-to-earn model, this Vietnamese firm has developed a token-based online video game that uses Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies. Players collect and mint NFTs that represent the company’s digital pets.

  • Roblox. Roblox enables creators in its Community to launch and co-develop new video games and deploy them to Roblox’s marketplace. The platform thus democratizes not only the distribution of but also the tools to create video games. 

  • GitHub. “Where the world builds software.” GitHub, Inc. provides Internet hosting for software development and version control. As the name suggests, it uses Git: a free, open-source distributed version control system

  • Kaggle. This Google subsidiary is an online Community of data scientists and machine-learning experts. It enables users to publish data sets, collaborate, build models, and enter competitions to solve data-science challenges.

  • LinkedIn. A business and employment-oriented online service, LinkedIn manages its enormous Community (880 million members) through websites and mobile apps. 

  • Peloton. As a result of the boom in home exercise equipment ignited by COVID lockdowns, Peloton became the largest fitness platform in the world, with a loyal community of more than 1.4 million members.

  • Fitbit. This maker of wearable, wireless exercise devices, as well as the web-based analytical software that supports their use, has more than 120 million devices used by 29 million Community members in more than 100 countries.

  • Reddit. A great example of a powerful Community. Reddit has just 700 employees, most of whom manage the platform. It sees an estimated 20 billion visits per year from 430 million users. Incredibly, Reddit hosts 130,000 different communities.

  • The Open-Source Software. Community dates back to the late 1980s. Users of FOSS (free and open-source software) devote long hours to testing and validating new versions and fixes, and provide detailed descriptions and reproduction cases of failures. 

  • Amazon. The world’s biggest Community uses Crowd to understand what products it should focus on. 

  • Stack Overflow. A question-and-answer website for programmers, Stack Overflow features high-quality, long-form answers to questions on a variety of highly specialized areas of digital technology. It has become the go-to tool for technologists and developers looking to solve challenging problems or find canonical answers for approaches. Community members are rewarded with a Karma-based point system. A key value to Community members is the ability to strengthen their profile and amplify employability.

  • XPRIZE is a worldwide community of innovators who self-organize into teams to attack and solve very clear, specific incentive-prize challenges. In 2021, the XPRIZE launched a $100 million competition, funded by Elon Musk, to remove gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere and oceans. More than 1,200 teams registered to compete. In April of 2023, the foundation launched an $11 million “Wildfire” XPRIZE, asking teams to build and demonstrate the technology to identify a fire at ignition, and then autonomously put it out within 10 minutes.
