Lesson 11. Decentralization and DAOs

Several of the ExO attributes, particularly Autonomy, point to a more decentralized future for organizational design. Combining ExO attributes—MTP plus Community and Crowd, Autonomy, Interfaces, and Dashboards—enables and drives the creation of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations . Decentralized systems scale naturally, enabled by Interfaces. Known as “Smart Contracts” in the Web3 world, these Interfaces allow anyone to self-provision to membership of a DAO.

We believe that MTP-centric DAOs will be the organizational form of the 2030s. For the first time in human history, ExOs will provide a global organizational structure to tackle grand challenges like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The enormous challenge to this development—one that will take a few years to sort out—is governance. As Austin Hill, founder of Blockstream, puts it, “DAO governance? Take the antics at an annual public company shareholders’ meeting and grow it to internet scale.”
