Understanding Value Moat
AI capability itself is fast becoming a commodity, most organizations can access similar tools. Real, lasting advantage comes from things that are hard to copy and get stronger the more you use them.
That includes data only you have, network effects that make your offering better as more people use it, how much value you squeeze out of every person and dollar, how fast you can reconfigure when conditions change, and judgment calls only your most experienced people can make. A moat built only on “customers find it annoying to switch” isn't a real moat, it erodes.
Benefits of Value Moat
Genuine Differentiation
Advantages competitors can't just copy by buying the same software.
Gets Stronger With Use
The more the organization operates, the deeper the advantage gets.
Protection From Commoditization
You're not just reselling the same AI capability everyone else can access.
Clearer Investment Priorities
You know exactly which capabilities are worth protecting and building on.
Higher Long-Term Value
Real moats support premium pricing and durable growth.
Resilience Against New Entrants
A genuine moat is hard for a new competitor to close quickly.
How to Build Value Moat
- Ask which of your advantages a well-funded competitor could copy in six months, and stop relying on those
- Identify the data your organization uniquely collects and invest in using it well
- Look for network effects, where more users or partners make the product better for everyone
- Measure how much output you get per person and per dollar, and work to improve it
- Protect and grow the judgment calls only your most experienced people can make, that expertise is a moat too
